Guildford Spike:
The Casual Ward of a Workhouse

Guildford Spike is all that remains of the old Workhouse for Guildford. It was the part of the building that was used to house vagrants – those unemployed paupers who would wander the area looking for work without much success.

We were commissioned to create an introductory film and produce some soundtracks for the sleep and work cells.

We proposed creating a drama piece portraying characters some of whom would then be heard in the cells.

Two main characters would dominate the piece, drawing viewers’ emotions in by discussing with each other their own plight, and in so doing were able to also convey important facts about the way these institutions were set up, what they did and did not provide for their inmates.
