Hampshire County Museum Service:
King Alfred
King Alfred (him who was supposed to have burnt the cakes) was in fact an extremely influential ruler.
For a high profile temporary exhibition, Hampshire County Museum Service commissioned us to produce a video that would act
as a visual background for the exhibition. Its purpose was not to convey detail but rather to add atmosphere and highlight
the 3 themes of the exhibition, Wealth, Wisdom and Warfare.
An especially composed music and effects soundtrack was written to accompany the thought provoking visual treatment,
which showed close-ups of various relevant pieces of action highlighting the centrepiece of the exhibition, namely the
“Alfred Jewell” borrowed from the Ashmolean Museum. This historic relic is one of six (historians think) given by Alfred
to influential Bishops in order to motivate them (sorry!) to educate the populous of Britain.
We also recorded experts speaking “Old English” to add to the flavour of the piece and translated these phrases as part
of graphic elements to convey a few important pieces of information relating to the themes.
“The result was really fantastic, exactly what we were after”, says Mark Fenton, HCCMS’s senior interpretative designer.
